Katherine is a Lecturer in Discipline in the Psychology Department at Columbia University. She received her PhD in Psychology from Columbia working with CRED.  Katherine’s research centers around how people understand and react to threats posed by natural hazards (e.g., earthquakes, floods, fires). Among other topics in the area of decision making under uncertainty, her current focus is on the differential effects on risk perception of personal experience, virtual or vicarious experience, and statistical presentations of risk information. She is studying these problems in the lab setting, in applied field research, and through cognitive neuroscience methods such as fMRI and patient studies.

Katherine has also studied methods of eliciting temporal discount rates, environmental decisions made by groups and individuals, and the differences between expert and lay understandings of various types of hazard information.
